Why Expert Project Management Sets Your Rail Branding Apart

August 12, 2022

Successfully organising a rail branding project is a mammoth task that takes careful and deliberate planning. In terms of brand implementation, rail projects are unique and complex because of their large-scale nature.

Not only are the trains themselves large-scale, but so is the project scope, due to having to monitor H&S regulations, navigate trains needing to be in use, coordinate installation teams, and minimise downtime to avoid potential revenue loss.

An integral part of this is to work with project management professionals that can help you run everything smoothly.

Why is choosing the right project management team so important?

More and more organisations are starting to realise that good project management is directly correlated to fast results and satisfied customers. You can expect unlimited benefits if your project management team gets it right and runs everything smoothly.

There have even been reports from the Project Management Institute to suggest that the demand for project managers has been growing significantly over the years.

This is indicative of the advantages of professional project management, which include:

  • One point of contact for your customers
  • Clear strategic objectives
  • Quickly turning plans into action
  • One source of accountability for the project
  • Streamlined team responsibilities
  • Saves your company time and money
  • Boosts team morale
  • Minimises the amount of downtime

In terms of rail project management, it’s important to have a team in place so they can keep things under control when things get complicated. They’ll be able to make sure your projects get completed within budget and delivered on time - while still maintaining quality standards.

When no specific people are responsible for the project, it leads to instability and creates managerial chaos. This ultimately causes a fractured team, low motivation, poor performance, and unfulfilled obligations.

Professionals in rail project management should know the ins and outs of railway infrastructure, hold the correct certification, and know how to mobilise large teams of people effortlessly.

This makes it imperative to secure a PM and installation team that have vast experience with projects of similar scope, regulatory requirements, and division of labour. The experience of understanding how to align the project objectives with your business areas is invaluable.

What rail project management solutions do you offer?

When it comes to rail projects, downtime is not the only issue that holds you back - there are often also limited facilities for installation. However, Aura offers an abundance of installation hubs up and down the country, used by our OnRoad fleet branding team.

In the rail sector, we work with companies like Alstom in Derby to use space in their depot as an installation base and have access to a variety of these depots throughout the UK. This means we can always work where the rolling stock is located.

Rail projects can be extremely hazardous, which means all our installers and project management personnel are fully trained and Heath and Safety certified for every site we work at.

As well as H&S certification, our team must possess the PPE equipment and fire compliance required on sites like these – this includes boots, bump caps, high vis jackets and goggles. Our PMs are also certified to the highest standard, each holding PRINCE2 qualifications.

Take a look at one of our OnTrack videos for a visual reference of what these sites look like and the protective equipment required!

project management team overview

The size of large-scale depots and their assets means that the project manager must organise a large team of installers. While our fleet graphics teams can complete a van using only a single installer (or a trailer with a small team of 2 or 3), a train will take a team of 5 or 6 to complete it on time.

This is all while communicating with the client and our internal installation coordinators to ensure all parties are happy with the end product and the trains get to where they need to go.

By constantly liaising with the customer, our project managers make sure standards are set and agreed upon during the implementation plan, including a schedule of works. They then work hard to ensure these standards are followed by the entire team and reported on throughout the project.
